$4.9B electric vehicle battery plant announced for Windsor, Ont.

Stellantis and LG Energy Solution are embarking on a groundbreaking $4.9-billion joint venture to establish Canada's inaugural lithium-ion electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing plant in Windsor, Ontario. The initiative, announced by federal and provincial officials, promises to generate 2,500 jobs in the region, supported by incentives from both levels of government. Premier Doug Ford hailed the endeavor as the largest automotive investment in provincial and national history, positioning Ontario as a pioneer in the electric vehicle revolution and upholding its legacy as a global auto manufacturing leader. With an annual production capacity of 45 gigawatt hours, the factory, located strategically close to the U.S., aims to supply a significant portion of EV batteries across North America. Stellantis' Chief Operating Officer, Mark Stewart, emphasized the factory's pivotal role in the company's broader strategy, positioning Windsor as an ideal hub for business due to its proximity to the U.S. market.
