Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative

What is a  zero-emission vehicle(ZEV)?
A ZEV is a vehicle that either produces no tailpipe emissions or has the potential to produce no emissions. There are three types of ZEVs on the market.

BEVs use electric motors that draw electricity from on-board rechargeable batteries. They are the most fuel-efficient vehicles available. BEVs produce no tailpipe emissions.

These types of vehicles could be ideal for someone who wants to dramatically reduce fuel costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and vehicle maintenance expenses.

PHEVs have rechargeable batteries and gas engines, so you have the flexibility of charging at home, or filling up at a conventional gas station. When operating in electric-only mode, PHEVs produce no tailpipe emissions.

This type of vehicle could be ideal for someone who drives long distances and wants to transition to a BEV in the future.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs)

FCVs use hydrogen to power the electric motor that propels the vehicle. FCVs emit water vapour and warm air only—they produce no tailpipe emissions.

In a fuel cell, hydrogen reacts electrochemically to produce electricity to power the car.

Why choose a zero-emission vehicle?

Save on fuel and maintenance costs

It can cost five-to-ten times less to charge a battery-electric vehicle compared to fuelling up an equivalent-sized gas vehicle to travel the same distance.

City Road

Get you where you need to go

A zero-emission vehicle can travel 300 km to 600 km on a fully charged battery. Most Canadians drive a lot less than 300 km each week

Germinated Plant

Better for the environment and your health

Switching to a zero-emission vehicle is one of the highest impact actions you can take to reduce your carbon footprint.

Installing Solar Panel

Support sustainable jobs in Canada

switch to zero-emission vehicles is done in a fair way involves preparing workforces to fully participate in the low-carbon economy

Incentives for Zero-EmissionVehicles Program (iZEV)

Transportation is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada.

One way to reduce the amount of transportation-related GHG emissions is to put more zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road.

In order to encourage the adoption of ZEVs by Canadians and Canadian businesses, the Government of Canada launched the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program .

Up to $5,000 is available at the point of sale to Canadian individuals and businesses for the purchase or lease of light-duty ZEVs. Most personal vehicles, like cars, SUVs, and light pick-up trucks fall into the light-duty vehicle category.

Some of the eligible vehicles under the iZEV Program are below. The complete list of eligible vehicles is here
